Northern Lights charity Christmas single

By Flo Lunnon
8th December 2021
Myself and co-president of A Cappella Society ‘Northern Lights’ Sam Jones, were really keen to do more Outreach work this year. We felt it was so important to get back into the community and spread some A Cappella fun and cheer, after the pandemic left everyone feeling so isolated. Sam and I both spent our Freshers…

Lumiere recording project

By Jude Holloway
12th November 2021
Durham University musicians were asked to record the orchestral part of the soundtrack for a Lumiere installation. For this, a specially-created ensemble was assembled, consisting of 38 of the university’s most talented musicians. An application was sent out for a student to conduct and, as a keen conductor, I applied and…

Durham and Steinway: A match made in heaven

By Mary-Anne Grego
26th July 2021
There is, quite literally, no greater music to a pianist’s ears than the topic of Steinway Pianos. Luckily for me, here’s an entire blog dedicated to them! Why you ask? Because as of the academic year 2021/2022, Durham University is becoming an all Steinway Uni!!! *queue cheering* Students practicing Firstly…

Performing live at Sage Gateshead with Sir Tom!

By Emma Farmer
23rd June 2021
Following a (surprisingly) successful audition in late-September 2017, I first rehearsed with Durham University Orchestral Society (DUOS) in my very first week of university. I was immediately overwhelmed by the high standard of the orchestra, as well as the quantity of exciting opportunities on offer. That year, we performed in…

Celebrating International Women's Day with music

By Amanda Botelho
5th March 2021
I first read about Music Durham on the University website prior to coming to Durham from Goa in India and knew that I simply had to get involved in it! After a crazy Freshers’ Week (…and first month) full of auditions and call-backs (both music and theatre, since I was apparently very keen to get involved!), I was ultimately…

There are so many great places in County Durham an There are so many great places in County Durham and the wider area to visit in the post exam season, or even in term time if you can squeeze them in! Last week my housemates and I ventured out to The Holy Island of Lindisfarne for a fun day trip!
.
.
The island is incredibly historically relevant for the area, and can be reached by a causeway only at certain times of day depending on the ride timings. There are many beautiful views with beautiful stone beaches, and some great opportunities for seal spotting! 🦭
.
.
Whilst this is a bit of a longer day trip from Durham it can be reached by both train/bus and car so there are plenty of ways to get here and we'd highly recommend a visit!
