Applying to university and choosing where to spend the next 3 or 4 years of your life can feel overwhelming. But, once you start to think about what you want out of your university experience, the process becomes a lot easier and a lot more exciting! Here’s why I ultimately chose Durham as my first choice – and why it was the best decision I ever made!
Collegiate system
Durham’s collegiate system was a huge bonus for me. Being a part of one of its 17 colleges offers a unique experience – you’re not just part of a university or academic cohort but also a college family! The additional layer of support and community makes it a truly special experience to make friends for life.
Societies
Durham has every kind of society you can imagine from the weird to the wonderful. Ranging from celebrity fan clubs and debating groups to food-based societies (like hummus!) – there really is a society for everyone! And if there is a society you want to create, you can get support from the Students’ Union to do so!
Traditions
Steeped in history, Durham is known for its wonderful traditions! For me, the best is matriculation – this is the ceremony that formally inducts you into the university. It typically takes place in the cathedral but, due to the pandemic, mine was done in a huge tent on the racecourse! Still, getting dressed in my suit and gown, taking matriculation photos on the bridge and officially joining the university was a truly special experience.
Formals and balls
One of the most exciting aspects of Durham life is the formals and balls. From college ones to society ones, they are a fabulous experience to get dressed up, enjoy a meal you didn’t have to cook and spend quality time with friends. Each college has their own traditions for these so for anyone who enjoys a bit of pomp and pageantry, this is an experience not to miss!
Geography and size
I didn’t come from a major city like London or Manchester, so a big city didn’t quite seem like the best fit for me yet. Durham was ideal then – it’s small enough to not be overwhelming but big enough to still have a vibrant student community with lots to do. Plus, it’s only a 15-minute train journey away from Newcastle for when you do want a bigger city experience.
Durham University is truly unique. I knew I wanted to pursue my studies at a place that was a perfect mixture of fun, tradition, and academic rigour – that is exactly what I have found Durham to be! My biggest piece of advice for deciding on whether or not to make Durham your firm choice would be to think about what you want out of your university experience – this will ensure that you have some of the best and most pivotal years of your life.
