My name is Rui Fang. I am in my 3rd year PhD in nano-electronics, and on the way to graduation. As an international student at Durham University, I have had the opportunity to serve as the president of Hatfield College’s Middle Common Room (MCR). The experience has been both rewarding and challenging, providing me with unique insights into the workings of the university and the role of student leadership.
Representing the postgraduate community
One of the most important aspects of being the MCR president is the responsibility to represent the interests of the postgraduate student community. This means working closely with the college administration and staff to ensure that our needs and concerns are being heard and addressed. It also involves organizing social events, academic support, and professional development opportunities that cater to the diverse interests of our members.
Meet people from all over the world
One of the greatest benefits of serving as MCR president has been the opportunity to meet and work with students from all over the world. As an international student myself, I understand the challenges and opportunities that come with studying in a foreign country. Being able to connect with others who are going through similar experiences has been invaluable, both personally and professionally.
Strong relationships
Another important part of the role is building strong relationships with other student groups and societies across the university. This involves attending meetings, participating in joint events, and collaborating on initiatives that benefit the wider student community. It has been a great way to build networks and make connections that will be useful both during my time at Durham and in my future career.
There are also challenges
Of course, being the MCR president is not without its challenges. It requires a lot of time and dedication and can be stressful at times. However, the support and encouragement from fellow students and staff have made it a rewarding experience. It has taught me valuable leadership skills, such as communication, delegation, and problem-solving, that will be useful in any future roles I may take on.
Get involved
In conclusion, serving as the president of Hatfield College’s MCR as an international student has been a unique and fulfilling experience. It has provided me with the opportunity to represent and serve the postgraduate student community, build networks, and develop leadership skills that will be useful in my future career. I would highly recommend getting involved in student leadership at Durham University, as it is a great way to make the most of your time here and build connections that will last a lifetime.
